In a letter today to commissioners of the Group Insurance Commission, National President David Holway called for an immediate re-opening of the health plan enrollment period to allow state employees to choose which health insurance plan best fits their needs and the needs of their families, given the unexpected increase in the premium split passed by the legislature in June.
"It isn't fair to ask employees to commit to a plan in April (the open enrollment period), when complete information about premium costs isn't available until June," said Holway.
With information now in hand about the increase in the premium split, some employees may wish they had decided in April to switch to a lower-cost plan. If the GIC refuses to re-open the enrollment period, employees will be stuck in their existing plan until July 2010, a full year.
