In order to provide a workplace free of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) hazards, the VA designated the office of Human Resources and Administration as the Designated Agency Safety and Health Official (DASHO). A Safety Steering Committee (SSC), composed of representatives from each Administration, key organizations, and the unions that participate in VA’s National Partnership Council, was also formed to work with DASHO to ensure that the Department achieves progress in the prevention of injuries and illness, complies with federal and VA safety policies and procedures, and maintains accountability at all levels for safety and occupational health.
NAGE is represented on the Safety Steering Committee by NAGE National Safety Representatives Kathy Fiery (Local R4-78, VAMC Martinsburg, VA) and Ron Reynolds (Local R5-184, VAMC Lexington, KY).
The SSC meets quarterly to fulfill its mission. To view announcements regarding the quarterly meetings and other SSC activities, please go to www.va.gov/VASAFETY

SAFETY STRATEGIC PLAN
Importantly, the SSC, in partnership with VA’s safety community, developed a VA Safety Strategic Plan (SSP). The DASHO, along with the SSC, is charged with overseeing the safety governance process and monitoring the implementation of the plan. Together, the DASHO and the SSC ensure that the Department continues to achieve progress in the prevention of injuries and illness, complies with federal and VA safety policies and procedures, and maintains accountability at all levels for safety and occupational health.
